Betsy Lamoureux
, our director of student a
ctivities, was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2000. Her infection was due
to either a blood transfusion in 1988 or 1991, both after complications
from childbirth. They did not begin screening blood for Hepatitis C
until late 1991. In 2003 and 2008 she underwent grueling treatments,
with no success, to eradicate the virus. Currently she has beginning
stage cirrhosis and is waiting for the next (more effective) round of
drugs to become available, and is on a pre-transplant list with Boston
General Hospital. Hepatitis C can sometimes develop into cancer, so as a
precaution Betsy is seen frequently by her doctors. |
